How did my cat get a bald spot and what does it mean?

I just noticed that my cat has a new half-dollar sized bald spot on his hip. There's no red marks on the skin, the hair is just missing. I can't think of any way this could have happened! The spot is basically a perfect circle and there aren't any others on him. PLEASE let me know if you have any idea what this could be. As it is Easter the Vet is closed and I plan to call tomorrow, but for now I'm just a little nervous and would love some help. Thank you! Details: 1) He is not an outdoor cat 2) The skin is normal, not flaky or red. It just looks like it was shaved 3) We have one other cat who has no missing hair patches

  1. my guess would be another tom cat did it. Was he out side?
  2. It might be something like Alopecia.. or ringworm... but it could be something simple like stress... I really don't know... but don't hestitate to check it out tomorrow asap! Good luck!
  3. could be ring worm and he will neeed to go to the vets .. if you have any more pets I would keep hm away fromthem too as ringworm is highly infectious. It does hurt or itch its just a perfect circle watch for signs of more .. also be very careful yourself as it can be passed to humans.
  4. it could be a fungal infection, or he might have been bitten by something a while ago. You should get a vet to check it out just in case it is a fugal infection because humans can catch some of them too. .
  5. I know that I will not be much help, but I do know that if it is ringworm, it will be kind of dry and flakey. I agree check it out.
  6. When I first got my cat she had patches of hair missing and I thought it was from the hard life she lived on the street but turns out it was ringworm and unfortunately they can pass it to you (I caught it). If you have a blacklight the ringworm will glow but I would suggest you take the kitty to the vet tomorrow. Good luck.
  7. I don't know what causes this, but my indoor cat had the same thing about two weeks ago, other than the bald spot was above her eye. However, she still doesn't seem to have any other problems, and the hair is starting to grow back. So in my opinion, yes, take him to the vet when you can, but unless he has other signs of illness, don't be too alarmed.
