can a bald eagle release its talons when it is trying to fly?

eagles have been observed drowning when trying to catch fish. Is it because they can't release their talons or because they don't want to?

  1. I've heard of large salmon being caught with drowned eagles still attached to their backs. I may also have heard that if an eagle's talons are locked when its legs are extended, it is unable to open them until it is able to bend its legs. Can't say whether this is true or not though, sorry.
  2. They are able to release their talons as a rule. This may be caused by them choosing to not let go or it may be that they have a rather firm grip that they cant easily let go of, for example lodged in a bone. But they do have the ability.
  3. I'm sorry I don't know the answer to this, but what an interesting question.
