How to treat a dog with hair loss around the eyes and green gunk infection? Living in Vietnam & finding it hard to get good vetinary advice. Recently had a 3-4 month old puppy which spent lots of time with my friends dog (same age). My dog became ill starting with: eye infection, green gunk in eyes & hair loss around eyes, then became lethargic and lost her appetite. At this point I took her to the animal doctor. After 3 days of injections she began frothing at the mouth. After 4 more days of intermitent, but increasingly common frothing bouts, i gave the dog to the animal doctor for 2 days observation. After this she determined the dog to be crazy & advised she be put down. Unfortunately, testing for rabies wasn't an option. I'm not totally convinced that it was rabies: she wasn't aggresive till the fourth day of frothing & was still drinking small amounts of water till the end. My friends dog which used to socialise with my dog is now showing similar symptoms with hair loss around the eyes & green gunk and mild lethargy. What to do?

What do you give a dog for hair loss? She suffers from flea allergies and lossing her hair bad. I keep her on frontline a bathe frequently with flea shampoo. Someone gave me a steroide awhile back that was precribed to their dog for the same reason, it worked for the time being, but now without the pill it has just gotten worst.

my dog gets wounds, hair loss, puss from every dog collar i put him. what can i do? i have tried every dog collar on him: leather, regular collar, Harnesses collars, etc. i don't put it to tight. i know it has to be two fingers away from his neck. but he always gets wounds and hair loss and puss. can any one help me please? or should i take him to the vet to check him out? i put the collar for 2 days and then it starts to getting irritated

What causes dog hair loss? Our 13 year old Yorkshire Terrier has been losing his hair in spots all over his body. Lately he's been chewing at his skin till it's raw but he doesn't have fleas! His vision and hearing are both going bad due to old age, so could his hair loss be because of old age too?? Or could there be another probable cause? Dog hair loss after mange treatment? I have a blue heeler mix dog who about a month ago started having some severe itching, raw skin patches and hair loss. After a trip to the vet, the scraping revealed no mites but the vet suspected something. They put her on Simplicef for 7 days and a frontline type medication that is for fleas and demodex. Her itching is much better although not completely gone. Her sore spots are healing nicely. Her hair loss, however, seems to be worse. She is active and playful and after a good workout, her white fur appears extremely thin over pink skin. Her little ears are almost totally bare. There is no scabbing or raw spots, just pink smooth skin. I know that it will take some time for her hair to grow back but after what point of time should I start to be concerned about my bald pup?
What is causing the small patches of hair loss on my dog? My dog has small patches of hair missing hair on her sides. It wasn't too bad at first now I'm noticing more patches? She doesn't seem to be itching and has not lost her apetitite. In fact she is still very active. There isn't anything anything else wrong with her other than this. My dog has hair loss and black stuff on edge of both ears!!? I have a one year old jindo dog and recently i saw a strange missing hair area of about 1/2 inch long. It has flaking hair that just falls off at touch and it also has a lot of black crumby stuff. im not sure what is wrong with it! How long should it take for switching dog food to stop hair loss due to allergies? So my dog has lost a disturbing amount of hair. We took him to the vet and she said it looked like mange but the blood work came back negative. Then the vet said it was most likely an allergy to poultry. We switched to dog food with no poultry but it's been about two months and there is still no improvement. Should I wait longer to see improvement or insist that my vet send the blood work to be re-tested?
What are the reasons for hair loss on a dog other than shedding? My Chow/Spaniel mix is losing her hair in two different spots about two inches wide on her hind quarters. She has a slight skin irritation on the bald spots. I have seen her scratching in that area. She's 18 months old. She has been spade and lives in a fenced in back yard with her four litter mates. Cure for dog hair loss? A white jap spitz was entrusted to us yesterday by its owner. Patches of the poor dog's hair was lost due to still unknown reasons - the most likely of which could be poor grooming. It seemed that the other people to whom the owner entrusted his dog maltreated it, coz it doesn't want to get close to people, except when we give him meals. I understand it would take time for it to get close to us, but I want to help it regain its beauty (and eventually perhaps, gain its trust). Thanks for the answers.
Dog hair loss is genetic? My 8 month old collie puppy has been losing patches of hair since we've had her. It first started around her eyes and face. and is just recently moved to her legs just as the hair around her face is starting to grow back. She's been to the vet multiple times. She's been tested negative for Mange & Diabetes. The vet came to the conlusion that it is hereditary and will continue her whole life. The problem with this hair loss is that she gets an infection in that area each time. I do not know what to do... she gets a new infection every month. The vet says there is nothing they can do. Has anyone ever experienced this?

What could be causing my dog's sudden hair loss? I have a 5 year old australian border collie. When I was brushing her I noticed she has 3 bald spots that aren't really all that bad or noticable, but they still concern me. The largest is on her back about the diameter of a can of soda and already has spiky new hair growing back in. The second is on the outside of her leg and she has a completely bald patch the size of a penny that is slightly red. the last and worst is on the inside of her leg and is not completely bald, but is red and scaby and about half the size of a dollar bill. She has had dry skin problems in the past, but none since we started feeding her an all-natural organic dog food. She is not fixed, but has never gotton pregnant. She is lactating though, as she usually does for a while after being in heat. My mother says it's just her winter coat comming in, but she always thinks eveything is fine when it's not, so I dont trust her with my pets. What could be causing this? we switched her food over a year ago. my mom also likes to feed her table scraps, even though I tell her how horrible it is for the dog. Could this also be the cause?

DOG WITH HAIR LOSS AND ENLARGED NIPPLES. HELP!? I have a black lab aged 6. and im so stuck!. at about 2 years old he started to get a bald patch around his eyes, after that over a few months practically all of his fur on his back legs and tail and bum went. and it hasn't come back fully since. vets put it straight down to mites. done skin scraping and never found anything. then their next diagnosis was allergies so they gave him steroids because his fur would sometimes come back (not fully) but he would look near enough like a black lab again then a few weeks later it would go. allergies made sense for a while because he has oily smelly skin and he nibbles to point of bleeding and his paws in between his toes are red raw sometimes. they gave him steroids which he was on for a bout a year and a half. made no difference so i went back and demanded something else to be done because it wasn't only driving him mad it was driving me mad to having to watch him scratch and bite himself stupid...the vets then done another scraping and found nothing. she mentioned he had a yeast infection from the scratching which is what was causing the smell and greasy hair. i now have a shampoo which i have to do twice a week but still doesn't seem to be making any difference, if anything he is scratching more and his paws are now quite red a sore...i have spent hours on the internet finding out what is could all possibly be. i have read his symptoms could be linked to 1; allergies 2: mites (mange) 3: yeast infection 4: thyroid problems 5: hormone imbalance Here are his symptoms 1: hair loss back legs, bum, eyes, belly now on his front legs 2: thick greasy hair (foisty smell) 3: hot sensitive skin 4: constant scratching every where 5: flaky skin (dry) 6: sore, itchy patches between the toes. scrapes his feet along the floor as if hes been in stinging nettles. 7: would sometimes come accros as grumpy, no energy. 8: quite large nipples as if he is a bitch and finished feeding (no distcharge) his weight is fine, infact hes a big and strong lab. im thinking of getting him castrated. but with it costing £60 its something i cant just go and get done. but i am haoping to get it done within the next couple of months. i want to get this sorted so much as he is my baby and he is such a lovely dog with such a gorgous personality. he was a kenneled dog but he now in the house with and as you can imagin the smel and fur is almost impossible to keep under controll. he eats fine has a typical appatite of a dog (wants everything i have) the suggested a blood test to do more allergy tests but this would cost about £250 to £300. im considering taking out a loan somehow or something and just telling them to get it sorted properly but its not that easy. my dad has spent nearly £1000 on him over the last 4 years. he has been to 4 different kinds of vets. im so desperate to get this sorted. i cant walk him during the day incase people look at him and think he is being miss treated. it would kill me if anyone could think that. does anyone know what could be causing this hair loss on my dog? he's a 7 month old lab/hound mix i got from the shelter but within the last week i've noticed a few small circular ares of hair loss on his side and belly, a little bit smaller than the size of a dime. he now also has a few speckles of hair loss all in the same area on the inside of his front leg. he doesnt itch them and they dont seem to be causing any discomfort at all, they're not red or swollen or anything either. i have no idea if it could be something serious or if its nothing.

However, I know there are some conditions that could cause this and would like to get some thoughts ahead of time. The dog is a long haired dauchund female(not spayed) that is around 5 years old. She recently started losing hair along her tail, just along the the tail bone. It looks like a rat tail and I know I've heard of some diseases that this can be a symptom of. Hypothyroidism and Cushing's disease are sticking out in my mind and I like your thoughts. Please don't mention fleas because I assure you she has none and the hair loss isn't anywhere else. She's isn't itchy either, the hair is just thinning almost completely gone along the vertabrae of her tail.
please help! whats wrong with my dog?! (hair loss itching)? I have a ten year old papillon. He recently has been loosing some hair and itching...i though nothing of it at first, since every summer he would get heat rashes and loose some hair. But now he is going almost completely bald....his stomach area, legs, tail, and neck are going bald...and the hair he does have left is really dry and course. He is also itching and licking himself to the point of exhaustion and is actually scratching enough to make himself bleed. I was gone at my fair showing my horse for a week...and when I came back he was like this....I have checked multiple times, and cant find any fleas on him......he lives with my other papillon and cat...but they don't have fleas either He has lost some weight but i think its from itching all day. Dog has skin problem with hair loss? My dog has a skin problem on her back just before her tail and now spreading down the tail, and looks to be forming on the insides of the legs too. The skin is red and brown, some scabs, and some puffy/raised sores. The hair is thinning in these areas and where it has grown back it is short and coarse. It is very itchy and she bites at it and rolls on her back. This happened around the same time last year then went away. Why a dog (Shar Pei) would have hair loss on paws and/or face? My dog (puppy) is eight months old. He has lost the hair in between his paws and now seems to be losing the hair on top of them also. He also seems to have lost some hair on his muzzle or face. At first we thought that was from him putting his nose to the ground when he sniffs. Hair loss on the stomach of my lab mix dog? I have a lab mix dog we got from the shelter about 5 months ago. He is about 15 months old now. We know he has food allergies - they were diagnosed by the vet after doing some blood work when he had a really bad allergic reaction. We now have the stomach issues under control. The problem is that he is losing fur on his chest and stomach and the inside of his legs. It started out gradual. It has gotten worse pretty quickly. His skin is very easily visible on his chest now and the hair is very thin on the inside of his legs. The vet did not seem concerned but it is getting worse. Any ideas? Mange and fleas have been eliminated as possibilities and we feed him a very good quality food that was recommended by the vet. We will continue vet care but I wanted to see if someone had a similar experience.

What are the causes of Pug dogs having spotty hair loss? I know that Pugs are not supposed to live outside, but we have no choice unfortunately. We did construct a very nice, large insulated, heated and air conditioned dog house for them. They get their shots, worm medicines, flea and tick prevention, good food and fresh water. They are played with and loved a great deal. I recently shaved both pugs, like they do at the groomers, and I was saddened to see that the somewhat spotty coat I noticed on one of the pugs prior to shaving her was much worse looking than I had thought. The shaving revealed the extent of the patchy hair loss. I very rarely ever see them scratching themselves, so I don't know if it hurts or is uncomfortable for her. What would be some probably causes of this?
Vet told us to give our dog Melatonin for hair loss. Anyone else had that advice? My pekingese has had hair loss on his body and after suspecting a thyroid problem, and clearing the suspicion with blood test analysis, our vet was not quite sure what cause this and she said that we should try giving him Melatonin. I do trust her, but I am still wondering if any other pet owners were given this advice. Thanks
Unexplained hair loss in dog? I have a 3 year old mix breed that suddenly started to lose hair about a year ago. We took her to the vet and did skin scrapes for the mange and she has been tested for almost every kind of skin disease and infection there is. We have run the vet bill up over 4,000 dollars between 3 different doctors and nobody can give us a reason for her hair loss. She is otherwise very healthy and we have 2 other dogs and 2 cats that remain unaffected by what she has. She is now totally bald but she doesnt have any sores at all and her skin isnt itchy. Has anyone else had a dog with a similar problem and was the dog ever diagnosed? She didnt scratch the fur off, it just fell out like when you would pet her or brush her. We did put her on a special diet in the begginning and it didnt help. She has had almost every test possible done and it still remains undetermined. Thyroid was fine No fleas or mites

About a year ago he started to lose hair on his inner legs and stomach in small patches, and black hard skin and bumps would form in the hair loss spots. I wen to to a dog dermatological specialist and found out it was food allergies, and quickly changed his diet to Natural Balance duck and potato allergen free food. He has been doing great on the new food, but the places he has the hair loss have not grown back with hair. They are only on his legs now, and are small, button sized patches that have hard skin on them. The bumps are not soft like his regular skin. I was wondering if anyone knows anything I can do or give him to grow the hair back in those spots. (the dermatologist said it would grow back with his normal hair cycle, but it has not). Thank you.

why does my dog have hair loss? Thanks for responses so far! More details... the breed is a lahso mix, she's had a bald patch on her rump for almost 2 months now. Took her to the groomers 4 weeks ago. 1 week ago I took her to the vet bc she had a case of tape worm. She received a full physical. Vet said possible food alergies or seasonal allergies. She's eating Hill's Science Diet Sensitive Stomach dog food and pupperoni dog treats, but no people food. She's in excellent health otherwise. Vet suggested hypoallegenic diet by Science Diet that's supposed to be free of allergy causing ingredients. He also suggested she might have seasonal allergies and said could try a light dose of Benedryl. I'm not sure what mange is. She doesn't have fleas, but does constantly chew herself.. always nibbling on toes and chewing on bag legs. Vet did not suggest ringworm which is a fungus like atheletes foot right and not really a worm? But the purpose of the visit was to treat the tape worm. Thanks for the responses!!!
Frontline causing hair loss on my dog? I switched from Advantage to Frontline at the vet's suggestion. The first thing I noticed was how much more expensive it was. About 4 weeks later, I noticed my Irish Setter's fur coming out in exactly the spot I had applied the Frontline. And she stands there drooling. It's frightening... The vet wants me to switch back to Advantage, because he says the fleas are the real culprit... I think I'll try the Dawn, although that stuff is also very strong.
My dog has hair loss and the left side of her nose is swollen, hairless, and red.? I have a 6 month old pit bull who has some spots of hair loss on her cheek, her chest, and her side. The patches are not circular, which I know is ringworm. They are in no particular shape and where the skin is showing it is not red or swollen looking. It looks just like normal skin. She does have some white on her face, where one of the patches and the swelling around her nose are, and i have heard that with bully breeds it's common to have this sort of thing, but i am not sure and i don't have money to take her to the vet unless it is an absolute emergency. The swelling on the left side of her nose comes and goes. I have been putting cream on it that reduces pain and swelling, which helps, but when I don't put it on it is swollen. It doesn't hurt her when I touch it, but it is red, and the whiskers have come out and there is no hair, it is growing back but it is very short right now. Does any one have any idea what this could be?
Can I cure my dog's hair loss resulting from rabies vaccine? My black, miniature poodle has a good-sized hole in her fur, probably resulting from a bad reaction to a rabies vaccine. The vet tested her for mites and ringworm, and when both came back negative and the hair didn't grow back, she told me about the rabies vaccine possibility. Is there really nothing we can do to bring back this hair? This soft patch of skin is now so vulnerable to injury and infection -- this is a very lively, active dog who loves to play hard. Furthermore, I am upset that this adverse reaction is so common, yet you only find out about it after you dog has suffered. This vaccine was tough on my dog -- she couldn't move for a day and she then got the runs -- and now this bald spot. It's such a shame. Will Vitamin E help, or is that useless in such a situation? Is this really one, big, round scar? Thanks.
Dog bumps and hair loss.? I am sorry to post this question again. But I dont think I am explaneing it correctly. Before my dog came to us she was a breeder at a puppy mill. She was taken in by a foster family before she came to us. Her hair has been gone since the begining and the small bumps too. She is a fawn doxie and i know that they have some problems with hair loss. She is going to the vet with in the next month once we are able to find a reptuble one. The bumps on her back are the color of her skin and the size of a small pimple. There is no itching or any pain. Her hair is also starting to grow back. We also feed her candae dog food if that which i hear is good for her coat. What do you think I should do about this?
Dog with small hair loss and red sores? My dog is a 1.5 year old chocolate lab. He has red sores that are 1/2" - 1" in diameter and sometimes oblong in shape. They never appear to be filled with anything. He also has very small areas of hair loss (the size of a pen tip) on his legs. He also got a raised flaky skin patch around his eye that went away and left a small hairless patch. He is on allergy medication and thyroid medication (prior to this issue). He is also on purina EN and Canidae (Lamb and Rice) food because of GI problems (was on this prior to this issue). He was tested for ring worm and it came up negative. Nothing grew in the petri dish. We were treating him with medication, wipes, and shampoo for this (no real improvement). Does anyone have any idea what else it might be? Our vet has given 3 options: 1. Allergies (change his diet) 2. Fungal problem (put on fungal medication) 3. Bacteria problem (put on bacteria medication. Can anyone help me figure out the issue????
my allergies, hair loss and my dog? I found out two years ago I am allergic to dogs, dust mites and corn. I have a 4 year old rottie (indoors) , live on a dirt road next to a corn field. I try to avoid corn and corn syrup, my dog is not allowed in the bedroom. I can handle the fatigue,the itching, the headaches etc but have been losing my hair for about 5 months. hair loss in dog after clipping? i recently took my dog to Petsmart to be clipped. He is a shelti mix and severe dandruff. I had him clipped pretty short so that we could work on clearing up the dandruff issue. Dog, Brittany, has rash and loss of hair under collar. What do you recommend? Two year old Brittany. We also have her mother who exhibited the same condition but not as severe when she was younger. We removed her nylon collar 2 months ago and replaced it with a nylon harness which doesn't contact her neck and has had no side affects. My dog was suffering hair loss but not any more!? My cattle kelpie cross used to lose lots of hair daily but I have changed her diet to adult lower fat food as she was overweight. Also I was under a lot of stress and perhaps so was she, being so in tune with me, but no longer so. Can anyone explain if either would contribute to her not losing so much now.
My dog has dry skin and a lot of hair loss. Any ideas? We have taken him to several vets. They have dicovered that he has a thyroid problem, so he now takes Soloxine 2x a day. We also switched his food to Canidae which was recommended to us, and he takes 2 extra strength Derm Caps. Nothing has helped and I know he is itching because I find him chewing and licking until the spot is raw. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions??

My dog has patchy hair loss, Why? I noticed some patchy hair loss in my 2 1/2 yr old fixed female black lab. The hair loss is above her right hip. Looking at her, you can tell patches of hair are missing on getting closer the hair has thinned in that area it seems that her skin is dry there are scales as well. I feel that her coat has gotten dry and brittle as well. In my opinion she hasnt always had the greatest of coats anyway. I havent seen her itching or chewing on that spot. I have seen a small decrease in her energy level, but she is always willing to play fetch she's quite anal about it actually. Ive noticed a change in her demeanor shes become a bit timid. Ive seen a decrease in her appetite. She isnt taking her treats, and she is always the last to finish her dinner, normally, she is the first. It goes without saying that I will be seeing the vet about her condition. We havent changed diet or havent started her on anything new. She did get a bath about 3 wks ago, with the same ole shampoo we always use. ETA: I havent seen her fuss over her coat, EVER- She isnt a licker, or an itcher, which is why I feel that the hair loss is odd. I could see the loss if she was itching, or licking the spot, it's almost as though she dosnt notice it at all. ETA AGAIN: She, along with my other lab have been treated with front line for flea's and ticks.
my dog has allergies to dust & storage mites.Started on allergy shots. How can I stop his continued hair loss? He is a yorkie/chi mix and is just so uncomfortable.
