Yellow hornets in a Bald Faced Hornet Hive? Ok, we have a bald faced hornet hive on our basement window, and have been watching them for awhile. Then I noticed that there were yellow colored wasps entering the nest. Now the nest has zero activity. It seems early for the nest to die, but I am to chicken to thunk it! Could this have been a fight to the finish? Ok, I was gone when the hive was built, and my husband just informed me that I have it backwards. It was the bald faced hornets that invaded a smaller yellow hornets hive. BFH are known to eat other yellowjackets, so I guess this makes sense!
Bald Faced Hornet nest on my lawn? I want to mow my lawn, but the problem is that there is a part of my lawn under one of my trees. Under one of the branches, about 6 feet up on this tree is a bald faced hornet's nest. It is the size of a basketball. I don't want to disturb it, because I know they get rid of bad insect, but my lawn is getting out of hand under that part of the tree. Should I take the risk and try it, or destroy the nest?
bald faced hornet sting? I was stung by a bee today. Afer research I learned it was a bald faced hornet that stung me. I still have pain after 9 hours after the attack... anyone know how long this will last? Never encountered this species before.

HELP - Being over run by the bald faced hornet.? Last year I had 21 nests in the ground right in front of the house. After I tried every pesticide Lowes carried for hornets, I went to Southern States for some expert advice. They recommended a different pesticide that I put on their nests and wiped them out. This year I have a much bigger problem. There seems to be 2 or 3 times as many but only 3 nests in the ground and I can't seem to control them. There are up to 70 flying around in a small area in front of the house just a few feet off the ground. They seldom land and never seem to go in their nests. There hornets are huge. Slightly longer than bumble bees and I think their are bald or white faced hornets. I doubt that most of them nest in front of the house seeing as I never see them go in the nest as I saw them last year. Any suggestions? The pesticide I am using is deltamethrin. I am spraying the nest and the yard. Dear John. They are a serious threat to my children and pets. We can not go outside and enjoy the front of our house because there are so many of them. If they were honey bees on my flowers I would leave them alone. But they have taken over my yard and need to go.
so i was driving down the road on tuesday, and a bald faced hornet flew in my window and hit me on the arm,? how can i tell if it bit me or if it stung me? it is still really red and swollen and itches really really bad. the center of it had some white bump on it and i got it off, but now there is like a scab that is sunken down so i cant get it off to tell if there is anymore pus in it, does anyone know about bald hornets and there stings, how do i get the swelling and itchiness to go away? i tried baking soda and water, hydrocortizome cream and all that nothing is helping.
what eats bald faced hornets? I have a bald faced hornet nest under my garage awning. I was contemplating if I should remove them or leave them be, but came home the other day and something had ripped into the nest and ran them off. I assume it ate a bunch of them and the rest of the nest moved on to a better home. It had to have been a bird as high at it was. I'm curious, what would attack and eat these hornets like that?
What is the bald faced hornets natural predators? I have found their nest and went back several days later and found that something had torn the nest to bits. Does anyone have any idea what might have done that? No Ralph Harris is not guilty of that at least! This happened in July and the nest was in the top of a tall tree. The predators must have ben something that could fly. I don't think the branches could support even a possum or raccoon. .
What to do about Bald Faced Hornets? Today we were outside and noticed a lot, I mean really a lot, of Bald faced hornet's on our Dogwood tree and flying around it. They seemed to be having a good time with some patches where the bark was gone. We cant see a nest, but I'm assuming that's kinda what they're going for. We have 2 small children and I dont want them to get stung, and the tree is near the apple tree that we spend time under on nice days. Any ideas on what to do, considering we cant see the nest? We tried spraying them with wasp spray, but they just flew away... I'm thinking they were either using the bark to make a paper nest, or eating..sap? Or both. I'm scared haha. (No, but seriously) Oh, and we live in Washington State, if that matters.
Bald face hornet any experience? I do landscaping for a small number of clients. One of them has a bald face hornets nest on the property but i've heard unless you "disturb" the nest they will not even bother with you. I havent been stung yet but i tend to think a mower might rile em up enough to attack
why do bald faced hornets go on dog manure? everytime i clean up the dog manure in late summer i have to see bald faced horets on them. they play king of the hill chasing the flies off them even yellow jackets too, to stay in control of the poop lol. i have seen the bald faced hornets catch flies and take off with it and i follwed it it to a near by post or tree branch and it chewed the flie or yellow jacket up, the flew off im guessing back to the nest. why would it pick poop, i seen them in bushes looking for flies too and yellow jackets. i even seen it bump heads with other bald fACED hornets and they look like they are fighting. bald faced hornest never vist picnics so far that i seen. just yellow jackets
bald faced hornets? all black bees with white face? here in Oregon i hear them called bald faced hornets, but, when i looked up that name, all i get are a black version of a yellow jacket. these bees/hornets/wasps are large, almost the size of a bumble bee, but a little skinnier then a bumble bee, much larger then a yellow jacket, and its all black except the top of the head and part of the face. there's no other color, or white anywhere else, also i normally see there nests in the ground. there's many of them i've only seen them in the ground, when i was a little younger i fell into a nest of them, and trust me, they aren't the normal bald faced hornets, those just look like black and white yellow jackets, these are PURE black, except the head, and much bigger.
Can anyone identify this hornet/wasp? It's very similar to a Bald-faced hornet except for the red around the face. It's about 1 inch long. Thanks! http://picasaweb.google.com/lyssarau/20091027?authkey=Gv1sRgCKOx-N2y25KLOQ&feat=directlink

Insect Research? (Medical?)? Ok... I used to have lyme disease. But then about 2 months ago I got stung a couple times by a bald faced hornet. Now I'm cured. I was wondering if there was anyway I could get into (or someone to contact) about research into this this. Also....is there any way to have a breeding colony of baldfaced hornets? (in the same way one may have an ant farm) or do they need to remain outside like honey bees?
Whats eating my Asian Pears? I have two trees that had an incredible amount of pears this year, i been picking the ones that are damaged or very small compared to the others. I have noticed ants on the trees some were making holes in the pears, also lots of lady bugs. On the other tree i noticed some yellow jackets, ants, lady bugs, and i seen one and for the first time a bald faced hornet? The pears are not quite ripe yet, i live in north east ohio near lake erie. and like i said the pears are still pretty hard . It wasn't a week ago i checked on the trees and they had all the bugs and such, today i checked them again to spray the trunks with some pepper spray to keep the ants down a bit, and the tree that had the yellow jackets hanging around it has dropped all its fruit and there all rotten? Please tell me what happened and how to prevent this next year. If you suggest i use a pesticide please let me know what specific one if you can, preferably something available from a regular store such as wal-mart. Thank you for your help in advance.
